Michelle is one of the sanctuary’s proud “wild girls”: a capuchin who prefers the quiet company of her own troop to the bustling curiosity of human visitors. She came to Jungle Friends as part of a dramatic rescue from a failing roadside zoo, where she lived in a crowded enclosure with more than two dozen other capuchins. Understandably, she never developed much interest in one-on-one human interaction, choosing instead to keep a careful, observant distance. Staff often spot her perched in a roof hammock, peering out with sharp eyes as she stealthily keeps track of the day’s activity.

Despite her cautious nature around people, Michelle’s softer side shines through in her relationships with her fellow monkeys. Shortly after arriving at the sanctuary, she welcomed her baby, Cindy, and proved to be an attentive, devoted mother. She shared that role beautifully with her longtime companion Nell, who helped raise Cindy and remains one of the best friends in Michelle’s life.

These days, Michelle lives in a peaceful habitat with Nell and Link, a gentle capuchin retired from iron-toxicity research who has blended seamlessly into their little family. Michelle spends her time climbing high into the canopy, exploring the trees, and enjoying the quiet comfort of the companions she trusts. With her calm confidence and strong social bonds, she brings a grounding, natural spirit to the group that reflects exactly who she is: independent, perceptive, and uniquely her own.
