Pip arrived at Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary alongside 25 other squirrel monkeys, marking a significant milestone as the first troop to be retired from the FDA’s nicotine studies program. Their historic arrival, covered by CNN, was celebrated by animal advocates everywhere. With narrow, calculating eyes, Pip is constantly sizing up his surroundings and studying his companions, always on the lookout for an opportunity to assert himself as the leader.

He’s taken a particular liking to Haz, a more dominant personality in the group, and seems convinced that being loud and assertive is the ticket to the top. Pip often tries out his leadership skills by shrieking at his playmates, but they simply ignore him and continue with their games. Eventually, Pip gives in and joins in the fun, letting Mac and Gizmo lead the way. There’s hope that one day Pip will realize he doesn’t need to imitate Haz to be important—his own unique personality is more than enough to make him a beloved member of the troop.
