Mike

Species: Black Handed Spider Monkey
Background: Ex-Pet
Date of Birth: 7/1/1995
Arrival Date: 07/08/2006
With his calm presence and easygoing nature, Mike finds joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially warm, sunny afternoons. On bright days, you’ll often find him stretched out in the sunniest spot of his habitat, arms relaxed over his head, soaking in the warmth like a professional sunbather. It’s one of his favorite ways to pass the time, and he looks completely content while doing it.

Mike arrived at Jungle Friends alongside his sister, Molly, after a difficult beginning. The two were originally kept as “pets” in South Florida, and during the particularly intense hurricane season of 2004, repeated storm damage made their living situation increasingly unsafe. When it became clear their needs could no longer be met, euthanasia was considered. Thankfully, a compassionate neighbor stepped in and reached out to Jungle Friends for help, changing everything. Because of quick action and kindness, Mike and Molly were welcomed to Jungle Friends, where safety and stability finally became part of their lives.

Since their arrival, Mike and his sister have remained inseparable. They share snacks, groom one another, and spend long stretches quietly together. Gentle, affectionate, and easygoing, Mike brings a peaceful energy to his habitat. Whether relaxing in the sunshine or sitting close to Molly, he reminds everyone how powerful safety, comfort, and companionship can be.
