There’s something incredibly peaceful about being near Travis. With his calm demeanor and gentle heart, he brings a sense of ease to every space he occupies. His tongue often rests just outside his mouth, a lasting result of having his teeth removed early in life. Rather than defining him, it tells part of a much larger story—one of healing, patience, and quiet resilience.

Travis came to Jungle Friends from New York after his guardian was no longer able to care for him. His early life was challenging. Following misguided advice often given to people who keep monkeys as “pets”, his guardian had all of Travis’s teeth removed and castrated him. He spent twelve years living indoors and had never known the companionship of another monkey. When Travis first arrived at the sanctuary, the world felt overwhelming. He was timid and unsure, and it took nearly a month before he felt brave enough to step outside and explore his outdoor habitat.

With time, patience, and gentle encouragement, Travis began to blossom. Today, he is confident, curious, and happily settled in with his companion, Grandma Molly. He spends his days foraging, lounging in the sun, climbing, and swinging through the habitat. At night, he enjoys cuddling up beside Grandma Molly — something she wasn’t always ready for at first.

Now truly a monkey among monkeys, Travis’s story is one of healing and growth. His gentle spirit shines through in everything he does, reminding everyone just how powerful kindness and patience can be.
