Nell is one of our cherished “wild girls”: capuchins who grew up in a large, loosely managed troop at a failing roadside zoo and never became comfortable around humans. Because of that upbringing, Nell still carries herself like a truly wild monkey. She’s independent, alert, and happiest when she’s free to make her own choices. And here at Jungle Friends, she finally can.

Nell arrived with 24 other capuchins during a complex rescue effort. What was expected to be a simple relocation quickly became much more complicated when several females, including her companion Michelle, unexpectedly gave birth shortly after arrival. The zoo had claimed all males had been vasectomized, but the surprise babies told a different story. To prevent further unplanned pregnancies, the males were moved into a temporary bachelor group for proper procedures, and Nell moved with Michelle and newborn Cindy into a quieter habitat where the little family could settle safely.

Although Nell isn’t Cindy’s biological mother, she stepped easily into the role of protective aunt. Her calm presence and steady companionship helped Cindy thrive alongside her devoted mom, giving the baby the security she needed to grow up confident and free of the stress behaviors common in captive-reared infants.

Today, Nell lives with Michelle and their companion Link, a rescued former research monkey. Cindy is grown and lives close by with her partner Tony, but the family bonds remain strong. Nell spends her days climbing the tall trees in her outdoor habitat, her favorite place to be, living life exactly the way a wild-hearted girl should.
