Zaney is one of our “wild girls,” a group of capuchins who came to Jungle Friends after growing up in a large troop at a failing roadside zoo. With little positive human interaction in their early lives, they arrived shy, wary, and far more in tune with their natural capuchin instincts than most monkeys who come from pet or laboratory situations. Even so, Zaney’s compassion and quiet strength shone through almost immediately.

When the rescued group first arrived, no one expected surprises. Yet within days, three of the females gave birth, revealing that the zoo’s claims about the males being vasectomized had been far from accurate. One of those babies, Gavin, changed Zaney’s life. Although she wasn’t his mother, Zaney stepped into the role of “Auntie” with total devotion. When Gavin’s mother, Elizabeth, fell seriously ill and needed to be moved to the clinic for treatment, Zaney took over completely, raising Gavin with the kind of steady, instinctual care that only a true wild-minded capuchin can give.

Even now that Gavin is fully grown, the two remain inseparable. He still shadows his beloved Aunt Zaney, and she continues to guide him with the same calm presence and watchful eye she offered from the very beginning.

Zaney may be cautious with humans, but her heart is enormous. Her story is a powerful reminder of how resilient, nurturing, and deeply bonded these monkeys can be when finally given the chance to live safely and naturally, exactly as they were meant to.
